Q1: When did start the 5T project and what were the original objectives? What are the different actors concerned by the consortium?
5T is a public company owned by GTT (the Public Transport company of Torino), by the Municipality of Torino, the Province of Torino, and the Piemonte Region.
5T operates in Intelligent Transport Systems and Infomobility.
5T manages the Traffic Operation Centre in the metropolitan area of Torino, integrated with the Public Transport real-time Monitoring System, to get smoother traffic and to improve the performance of Public Transport.
Q2: What are the geographic dimension of the project and the key figures : number of citizens , number of buses , other public transports ?
5T coordinates the implementation of the next Regional Electronic Ticketing System (BIP Project), aimed to seamless integrate in a unique contactless smartcard the entire mobility network in Piemonte.
Key figures of the BIP project:
  • 4,4 million inhabitants in Piemonte
  • Over 3.440 buses
  • Over 400 railway and underground stations
  • Over 100 public transport companies involved
  • The BIP project also integrates other mobility services as bike-sharing, car-sharing and parkings
Q3:  when and why did you decide to implement an electronic ticketing systems? Why did you choose Calypso?
The Piemonte Region decided to launch the BIP project with the aim to strengthen the regional public transport service through:
  • Higher accessibility for citizens to the public transport and mobility services, thanks to a unique integrated and multimodal microchip contactless card
  • Improvement of public transport efficiency and effectiveness
  • Monitoring of the public transport service execution and certification of the public expenditure for the operating costs (around €600 million/year)
The BIP project plans the realisation of:
  • a Regional Electronic Ticketing System based on a pure contactless microchip smartcard
  • a public transport fleet monitoring system
  • an on-board video-surveillance system
In order to guarantee the BIP interoperability over the whole region, the Piemonte Region established the BIP architecture, the technical guidelines, the organisation and management rules and the “BIP System Base Specifications” which have to be adopted by the Public Transport operators as a reference for all the BIP public tenders.

With regard to the Calypso technology, the Piemonte Region chose Calypso mainly because of its strong capabilities in terms of transactions security (based on a clear separation of the components and the software security) and also considering this technology coherent with other national experiences.
Q4: If you start with a pilot what were the main results and conclusions at the different levels : technical , economical ? advantages for the administrators of the project and the users?
The Piemonte Region plans to directly start with the BIP implementation and operation and not with a pilot project.
Q5: what is now the roadmap of the development of you project. What are your objectives  in term of number of cards , number of transactions and  ?
At the moment the BIP project is in  the stage of the  development of the  European tenders for the acquisitions of the ticketing devices and the services centers:
  • 3 tenders ongoing,  province of  Torino, province of  Alessandria and province of  Novara,
  • 1 tender  terminated,  province of Cuneo
The road map schedules the roll-out of the system in the first part of 2011, with an estimate number of smartcards round 1.000.000 and an estimate number of transactions round 400.000.000 for year.
