Oberthur Technologies, one of the world's leading smart card suppliers, provided more than 1.2 millions of high secure contactless smart cards for a new e-ticketing project in Canada by supplying ACS Solution. ACS is the system integrator and designed the far collection of the group of transit companies of the regions of Montréal and of Québec. ACS equipped the metro and train stations, buses with new readers and point of sales able to accept contactless smart cards. Oberthur Technologies is the unique provider of the high secure microprocessor transit contactless cards for this new fare collection system of Montréal region. This project was carried out in close collaboration with ACS and Oberthur Technologies. On the 1.2 millions of cards delivered by Oberthur Technologies during 2007 and 2008 years the 450,000 were yet deployed in circulation since the service's launch at the end April. The Oberthur's cards feature a dual interface microprocessor compliant with Calypso [1] standards dedicated to the mass transit market enabling a fast, easy and secure use as well as customized services according to the commuter's needs such as electronic purse, access to car park, museum entry. The technology embedded DES and 3DES security algorithm offering a high level of security and providing extended services thanks to multiplications functionality. The new and modern cards offer more flexibility and several assets both for the commuters and the transport operators. On the commuter side, this smart card enables to buy tickets, to commute and change easily from the bus to the metro. These cards are reloadable at the automatic desk placed in the metro stations or in the point of sales in Québec and are introduced for season tickets and combine e-tickets with identity information providing usual reductions for the commuters. On the operator side, these innovative cards allow to fight against fraud, to reduce maintenance and exploitation cost, to increase the reliability and to analyze the customers trends. Live in spring 2008, the transition will be done gradually to familiarize the commuters with this new way of using the common transportation. "We are proud to work closely with ACS solutions to design tailor-made and secure microprocessor contactless smart cards which will enable the commuters to improve and simplify their way to commute" underlined M. Frédéric Chevreton, Director of Payment Product Line.
